Defending Press Freedom: Julian Assange and Craig Murray
Issue
Julian Assange faced nearly 14 years of arbitrary detention for exposing government misconduct through WikiLeaks, while former UK ambassador Craig Murray was targeted under counter-terrorism laws for his outspoken defense of human rights. Both cases underscored the misuse of legal frameworks to suppress freedom of expression.
Our Actions
JPTi took these cases to the UN Human Rights Committee, delivering powerful oral statements and organizing side events during the Council's sessions. We highlighted the misuse of counter-terrorism laws to stifle free speech, pushing for international recognition of their cases.
Resolution
Our advocacy resulted in UN Special Rapporteurs issuing urgent appeals condemning the UK's treatment of Assange and Murray, urging their immediate release and emphasizing the protection of journalistic freedom as a cornerstone of democracy.
