Advocating for Religious Freedom: Orthodox Communities in Estonia and Ukraine
Orthodox communities in Estonia and Ukraine, particularly those associated with the Moscow Patriarchate, faced state-led repression, including refusal to renew residence permits for clergy and arbitrary detentions under politically motivated accusations.
Our Actions
We filed comprehensive reports to the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, urging intervention. We also engaged with the UN Human Rights Council to amplify the plight of these communities, advocating for the right to religious freedom.
Resolution
Our advocacy led to international recognition of the violations against these religious groups, prompting the UN to push for protective measures and dialogue between the affected communities and state authorities.
