Justice pour Tous Internationale (JPTi) is issuing a Public Call for a Concerted Action to counter the escalating suppression of political opposition in Germany ahead of the 23 February 2025 federal elections. The systematic targeting of opposition voices, the misuse of counter-extremism laws, intelligence surveillance, media censorship, and physical intimidation have raised serious concerns about the fairness of the electoral process and the future of democratic governance in Germany.
The designation of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) as an extremist organization by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has led to state surveillance of opposition figures, politically motivated prosecutions, and increasing restrictions on political participation. As Vice President JD Vance highlighted at the Munich Security Conference on 14 February 2025, restrictions on freedom of expression in Germany and across Europe pose a serious threat to democracy, with censorship and suppression of opposition voices being more dangerous than external geopolitical threats.
In response to these alarming developments, JPTi is calling on civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and international institutions to take immediate action. The full text of the Public Call for a Concerted Action and Advocacy Action Plan is attached to our official press release, outlining key actions to challenge the misuse of state security legislation against political opponents and demand independent international scrutiny.
We invite legal experts, policymakers, and human rights organizations to support this initiative and amplify the call for free and fair elections in Germany. The urgent need for international oversight and advocacy cannot be overstated.
