Justice pour Tous Internationale (JPTi) is proud to announce a major success in its ongoing advocacy for Craig Murray, a former British ambassador, investigative journalist, and advocate for Scotland’s self-determination. After persistent international engagement and legal interventions, our efforts have culminated in AL GBR 15-2024, a formal UN communication to the UK Government, calling for urgent accountability regarding the misuse of counter-terrorism laws against Craig Murray and other journalists and political activists.

🔹 What Happened?
On 16 October 2023, Craig Murray was detained at Glasgow Airport under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000, a provision that permits detentions without reasonable suspicion of terrorism involvement. This incident is not an isolated case, but part of a disturbing pattern of repression targeting journalists and human rights defenders under state security laws. Craig Murray’s detention constitutes a blatant violation of fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, press freedom, and protection from arbitrary detention. His long-standing advocacy for Palestinian self-determination and his criticism of UK foreign policy made him a target of political harassment rather than a legitimate subject of counter-terrorism measures.
🔹 JPTi’s Advocacy & Chronology of Key Actions
Since 22 August 2023, JPTi has been at the forefront of international advocacy, taking relentless steps to expose this injustice before the UN Special Procedures, the OHCHR, and other international human rights bodies.
🔹 JPTi Thanks the UN Special Procedures for Their Leadership
We wholeheartedly thank and express our deepest appreciation to the UN Special Rapporteurs and OHCHR staff who demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, and courage in addressing these human rights concerns. In particular, we extend our profound gratitude to:
- Professor Ben Saul, Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights while Countering Terrorism, who led the communication with the UK Government.
- Ms. Irene Khan, Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression.
- Ms. Gina Romero, Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and Association.
- Ms. Ana Brian Nougrères, Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy.
- Ms. Karen Reyes Tolosa, Human Rights Officer at OHCHR, for her role in facilitating engagement with Special Procedures.
This is a landmark case in the fight for press freedom, civil liberties, and human rights accountability. The international community is watching, and JPTi remains steadfast in its mission to challenge repression and protect human rights defenders worldwide.
